Type Specimen

This comic-book themed playful type specimen and microsite is advertising Center, a rounded, rectangular based sans designed by Max Phillips of Signal Type Foundry. The brief involved creating a micro-site and a piece of print ephemera to advertise the licensing of Center. As a rounded-terminal sans specifically designed for length reading on screen, the massive Ultra soon became my favourite and from this, I carried a visual identity of big, graphic comic-style copy-writing through with halftone screen photography.

To showcase the tactile nature of the ballooning, ultra weight I decided to work with 3D type for the first time. I laser cut the font from birch plywood and photographed the letters with LED lights consistent with my chosen yellow and blue colour scheme. This gave me both a sense of depth and a drop-shadow effect on the type.

This typographic module focused on developing our core typographic skills and applying those skills to print and screen UX/UI outcomes. In accordance with the booklet, I coded a fully responsive microsite to facilitate the sale of the type specimen. I wanted to push the very physical comic-book theme into the digital world as much as possible.
